The HPA is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 membership organization that challenges the accepted wisdom of current standards of children’s health care and offers an additional understanding of health, wellness and illness.

Our Vision

To influence and support the transformation of the current practice of pediatrics into a safe, nurturing and sensible holistic health care system for families and to honor and respect the innate potential of the child from pre-conception through childhood and adulthood.

Our Mission

The HPA provides connection for families and practitioners, as well as education and support to both parents and health care practitioners through our Pathways to Family Wellness magazine and Pathways Connect outreach program. We offer a practical approach to pediatric care that focuses on the principles of health, wellness, and the safe resolution of illness. We offer alternative approaches and treatments for pediatricians and other health care practitioners to use in their practices. The HPA is dedicated to integrating treatments that utilize natural methods to stimulate healing, recover balance, and support the body’s own resilience

The HPA is committed to supporting parents who seek a healing model of health care, helping parents reduce the use of ineffective and harmful drug treatments, chemicals and processed foods, and empowering parents to build healthy bodies and spirits in their children.

 

Vision For Parents

•  Advance a new philosophical approach to parenting and well child care that focuses on the principles of health and wellness. Encourage the use of treatments that safely nurture and respect children’s growth and development.
• Help parents to identify the emotional, physical, social, psychological, environmental, mental, spiritual and ancestral factors that contribute to the health and well being of their children and their families.
• Help parents transform the health and well-being of their children and their families. Create opportunities and possibilities for parents to make shifts towards greater health and well-being.
• Review principles of healing, curing, fixing and nurturing. Identify the role illness plays in helping to create the opportunity for healing and transformation of children’s health.
• Educate parents about their options for prevention and treatment of pediatric acute and chronic conditions. These options include the following modalities but are not limited to western medicine, nutrition, nutrition therapy, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, chiropractic, osteopathic, cranial sacral, homeopathy, functional medicine, essential oils, herbs, environmental medicine, mind-body medicine, exercise and stress reduction.
• Offer programs for parents in the form of books, pamphlets, newsletters, audiotapes, videotapes, phone consultations, office consultations, teleconferencing, websites, on-line forums, lectures, workshops, conferences, journals, town forums, radio, TV and documentaries. Create a network of parents to exchange information and provide support.
• Continue to empower parents in their roles as primary care providers for their children.
• Honor parents for where they are in their path. Work with parents to identify their belief systems.
• Help parents make health care and family decisions that resonate with their belief systems.
• Support parents in their quest for knowledge and the discovery of their truths about parenting and the nurturing of their children’s well-being.
• Assist parents to work through their fears, anxieties and the pressures they face from the dominant conventional paradigm.
• Hold space for the contradictions and paradoxes within and between conventional & non-conventional belief systems and the varying therapeutic modalities.

 

Vision for Health Care Providers

•  Identify and explain different philosophical health care approaches—conventional and holistic.
• Identify the modalities and how they fit into the conventional and holistic models.
• Identify and explain the basic scientific principles of these modalities.
• Review the basic sciences of physiology, immunology, biochemistry and genetics as a framework to understand children’s growth, development and states of health and illness.
• Use an understanding of these basic sciences to devise prevention and treatment recommendations.
• Review principles of healing, curing, fixing and nurturing. Identify the role illness plays in helping to create the opportunity for healing and transformation of children’s health.
• Compare, contrast and integrate the similarities and differences between the basic scientific principles of these modalities.
• Offer, where possible, non-biased, high-quality, legitimate scientific support for the application of each modality. Recommend important scientific projects to support the use of different modalities.
• Explore the different perspectives of ‘evidenced based medicine’—scientific study, observation/discovery, intuition, historical use, mystery.
• Integrate the treatment approaches for pediatric acute and chronic conditions using the different perspectives of ‘evidenced based medicine’.
• Provide a network of practitioners for teaching, consulting and research.
